The Season 35 premiere of “Dancing with the Stars” is Tuesday … well, at least part of it is.

In a change from the format the series has followed for the last few years, the show will be doing a two-night premiere on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. But, that’s not the only major change being made to the show’s format for the premiere.

This year’s cast features 16 celebrity contestants and their pro partners, their first performances on the show will be split between the two nights.

Here’s a look at what you can expect from the “Dancing with the Stars” Season 35 premiere.

Unique format

The 16 couples will be competing over the two premiere episodes. Here’s a look at how that will go.

On the first night — Tuesday — the eight male celebrities will each perform a dance with their pro partner to a No. 1 song from the year they were born. Then on the following night — Wednesday — the eight female celebrities will do the same.

Each of the episodes will be two hours long. Fans will be able to vote during both of the episodes, but only for the contestants competing that night. The live audience votes will be combined with the judges’ scores to decide who is in jeopardy of elimination.

“We haven’t done this before,” said “Dancing with the Stars” pro Witney Carson to Today.com. “It’s not really news to me that we change some things out. We stay to the core of what the show is, which is competing and dancing. All of that stays the same.”

A premiere double elimination on the way

At the end of both nights, one male and one female celebrity will be eliminated from the competition.

The last time there was an elimination of one male and female celebrity during premiere week was in 2018, during Season 26. That season only had athletes competing and only had four episodes.

“I think it’s very scary that there’s an elimination both nights because that usually doesn’t happen,” Carson said. “But at the same time, there’s a lot of couples and that’s just (the) competition. You have to vote people out, and I think people are going to have a really hard time doing that because every celebrity is so amazing.”
