During a recent \u201cJeopardy!\u201d taping, host Ken Jennings got the chance to reflect on his college days at BYU \u2014 specifically the period of time when he was roommates with bestselling fantasy author Brandon Sanderson. <\/p>\n

Ken Jennings on being roommates with Brandon Sanderson<\/h3>\n

As the \u201cJeopardy!\u201d host, Jennings regularly interacts with the studio audience throughout filming. <\/p>\n

A video shared on the official \u201cJeopardy!\u201d Instagram page shows Jennings smiling and laughing as someone in the audience brings up his longtime friendship with Sanderson.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith your college roommate having just signed a big Apple TV deal, can we look forward to you making any other debuts?\u201d the audience member asked. <\/p>\n

Jennings and Sanderson were roommates at Brigham Young University in 2000 \u2014 four years before Jennings\u2019 legendary 74-game winning streak on \u201cJeopardy!\u201d and five years before Sanderson would get a manuscript published, the Deseret News previously reported.<\/p>\n

During the recent \u201cJeopardy!\u201d taping, Jennings recalled how the author worked as a night shift desk clerk at a hotel near their house \u2014 \u201cwhich I guess leaves you lots of time to write 1,200-page novels with 78 characters in them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Sanderson would come home from work in the morning and read aloud passages from his new material as Jennings and their other roommates made breakfast.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, at least I\u2019m not the nerdiest guy in the apartment for a change,\u201d Jennings recalled thinking at the time. \u201cThat was very nice.\u201d <\/p>\n

Jennings \u2014 who described Sanderson as \u201cone of the biggest names in epic fantasy\u201d \u2014 had high praise for his college roommate, who lives in American Fork, Utah. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s done very well,\u201d the \u201cJeopardy!\u201d host said. \u201cI learned last time I was in Salt Lake City … he now has a plane. Brandon doesn\u2019t fly commercial anymore. That\u2019s how many books that guy has sold. So I\u2019m also the second most successful person in the apartment.\u201d <\/p>\n

Brandon Sanderson appeared in a \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 clue \u2014 and then Ken Jennings roasted him<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Sanderson signed a deal with Apple TV earlier this year and said he was feeling \u201cconfident,\u201d as the Deseret News reported. This past February, he said the goal was to adapt his \u201cMistborn\u201d novel as a feature-length movie and the \u201cStormlight Archive\u201d series as a streaming TV series.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to be deeply involved,\u201d the author said.<\/p>\n

Other \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 moments with Ken Jennings and Brandon Sanderson<\/h3>\n

The friendship between Jennings and Sanderson has come up before on \u201cJeopardy!\u201d<\/p>\n

During a game in 2023, Sanderson was the answer to a clue that asked for the prolific author who finished \u201cThe Wheel of Time\u201d series. <\/p>\n

\u201cWow, I guess just about anybody can get in a \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 clue nowadays,\u201d Jennings shared on X following the game, per the Deseret News.<\/p>\n

But Sanderson wanted the last word.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t worry, Ken,\u201d he responded. \u201cMaybe one day you\u2019ll be famous enough to be a Jeopardy! clue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jennings also recounts his time with Sanderson in his 2011 book \u201cMaphead\u201d \u2014 which came up nine years later when he beat out Brad Rutter and James Holzhauer to win the \u201cJeopardy!\u201d Greatest of All Time tournament.<\/p>\n

\u201cA big congratulations to @KenJennings, my old college housemate, on his win tonight!\u201d Sanderson wrote on X. \u201cMost people know him for game show appearances, but he\u2019s a great writer as well. I suggest his book Maphead, if you are interested.\u201d<\/p>\n
