{"id":2049,"date":"2026-06-18T17:38:01","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T17:38:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=2049"},"modified":"2026-06-18T17:38:01","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T17:38:01","slug":"brandon-sandersons-fan-convention-is-leaving-utah-at-least-temporarily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=2049","title":{"rendered":"Brandon Sanderson\u2019s fan convention is leaving Utah \u2014\u00a0at least temporarily"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Utah fantasy author Brandon Sanderson announced this week that his yearly fan convention, Dragonsteel Nexus, has found a new home \u2014 and it\u2019s outside of Utah. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=2047\">Supreme Court rules marijuana users can own guns<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The convention, which in recent years has drawn thousands of Sanderson fans to Salt Lake City, will be moving to Denver, Colorado, starting in 2027, Sanderson said in a video posted to his YouTube channel. <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what Sanderson said about the move, and when fans can expect Nexus to return to Salt Lake City. <\/p>\n<h3>Why is Dragonsteel Nexus moving to Denver in 2027? <\/h3>\n<p>Nexus will be held in Denver starting in 2027 until 2030, while the convention\u2019s former home \u2014 the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City \u2014 is shut down for planned renovations, Sanderson said. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, it was announced that the Salt Palace, which hosts nearly 200 conventions every year, would be closed starting in the fall of 2027 for a \u201ca major renovation and redesign project\u201d that coincides \u201cwith the creation of a new large sports and entertainment district downtown,\u201d as KSL reported. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Salt Palace is really the only venue in Utah capable of holding Dragonsteel Nexus,\u201d Sanderson said about the decision to move to Denver. <\/p>\n<p>Sanderson\u2019s team was given a heads up about the Salt Palace closing, the author said, giving them time to scout out a new location for next year\u2019s event. After looking at venues in multiple locations, they settled on Denver for a couple of different reasons. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the really key ideas for us was finding a place that\u2019s affordable for our fans,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>According to Sanderson, his team felt that the costs of travel to Denver, including both airplane ticket prices and hotel prices, would be less expensive for his fans than other potential locations \u2014 in some cases, as much as half the price.<\/p>\n<p>But Sanderson said he\u2019s also a fan of the venue itself in Denver. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been to conventions in that convention hall, and it\u2019s a really good convention hall,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Although the plan for now, according to Sanderson, is for Dragonsteel Nexus to take place in Denver for the next three years, he acknowledged that could change. \u201cThere could be one of them we go somewhere else,\u201d he said. \u201cBut you should expect, in general, we\u2019re going to be in Colorado through 2030.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=2045\">Trump endorses all 3 Republican incumbents in Utah\u2019s primary elections<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>When will Dragonsteel Nexus come back to Utah?<\/h3>\n<p>As of now, Sanderson said that the plan is for Nexus to return to Salt Lake City once the Salt Palace has reopened. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope to be back in 2031,\u201d Sanderson said, which, he noted, likely would coincide with the release of the sixth book in his \u201cStormlight Archive\u201d series. <\/p>\n<p>However, he noted that his team has found that around 70% of the convention\u2019s attendees come from outside of Utah. He also said that the venue in Denver is slightly larger than the Salt Palace, meaning they will be able to offer more tickets and allow more people to attend. <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>Related<\/div>\n<div>Ken Jennings reflects on being Brandon Sanderson\u2019s roommate at BYU<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re able to get about 75% of you into the Salt Palace, so we\u2019re figuring if we have this larger space, we can add those extra 25% of you,\u201d Sanderson said, though he also said that they don\u2019t want the event to grow too large. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want Nexus to remain small enough that it has a small sort of feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>What about Dragonsteel Nexus in 2026? <\/h3>\n<p>Nexus will take place as usual in the Salt Palace this year, with the event scheduled for Dec. 3-5.<\/p>\n<p>Featured guests at this year\u2019s convention include Matt Dinniman, author of the \u201cDungeon Crawler Carl\u201d series, and Martha Wells, the Hugo Award-winning author of the \u201cThe Murderbot Diaries.\u201d <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><svg><g><g><g><\/g><\/g><\/g><\/svg><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>View this post on Instagram<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Other Utah cultural events on the move<\/h3>\n<p>Dragonsteel Nexus isn\u2019t the only convention that\u2019s been impacted by the upcoming closure of the Salt Palace. <\/p>\n<p>FanX Salt Lake Comic and Pop Culture Convention, which has taken place at the Salt Palace since 2013 and attracted over 100,000 visitors last year, will be moving to the Mountain America Expo Center in Sandy in 2027, KSL reported. <\/p>\n<p>Because of the expo center\u2019s smaller size, FanX will be holding two separate, smaller events in 2027, per KSL. <\/p>\n<p>Nexus will be following in the footsteps of Utah\u2019s largest cultural event, the Sundance Film Festival, by moving to Colorado.
