\u201cSupergirl\u201d failed to take off at the box office this weekend. <\/p>\n

Even though ticket sales overall were up 21% from the same time last year, DC Studios\u2019 latest superhero reboot took in only $38 million at the domestic box office \u2014 24% below prerelease projections of $50 million, The New York Times reported. <\/p>\n

\u201cSupergirl\u201d \u2014 which cost $170 million to make \u2014 came in second place at the box office to \u201cToy Story 5,\u201d which earned $70 million in its second week in theaters, per Variety. The \u201cToy Story\u201d sequel is expected to be the most successful of the franchise, and is on track to be one of the year\u2019s highest-grossing films. <\/p>\n

What are critics saying about \u2018Supergirl\u2019? <\/h3>\n

Critics appeared largely unimpressed by DC\u2019s latest effort, with the film rounding out to a rating of 55% on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/p>\n

Some critics had high praise for the film\u2019s star, Milly Alcock, even while panning the movie as a whole.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlcock is terrific in the role,\u201d Associated Press critic Jake Coyle wrote. \u201cIf only \u2018Supergirl\u2019 was as good as she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

New York Times critic Manohla Dargis called \u201cSupergirl\u201d \u201cderivative if altogether watchable, largely on account of its star.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some critics laid some of the blame for the film on a larger trend of \u201csuperhero fatigue.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHad we not been bombarded with a million superhero movies over the last 15 years, \u2018Supergirl\u2019 would be passably fine,\u201d wrote New York Post critic Johnny Oleksinski. \u201cBox office receipts have shown that the audience has reached a point where we selfishly would like these films to at least attempt to be special and unique.\u201d<\/p>\n

But not all of the reviews were negative. <\/p>\n

Brian Truitt, USA Today\u2019s film critic, gave \u201cSupergirl\u201d three out of four stars, writing, \u201cBrandishing an offbeat sense of humor a\u0300 la \u2018Guardians of the Galaxy,\u2019 … \u2018Supergirl\u2019 is an intergalactic revenge flick that boldly freshens up familiar tropes with the help of a jaded, self-destructive protagonist who needs to figure a whole lot of stuff out.\u201d<\/p>\n

What is DC Studios saying about \u2018Supergirl\u2019? <\/h3>\n

The reception of \u201cSupergirl\u201d isn\u2019t exactly good news for DC Studios, which has been working to reboot many of its superheroes. Variety is calling the film \u201ca major setback for the newly rebooted DC Universe.\u201d<\/p>\n

But DC is standing behind the film \u2014 and its long-term strategy. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhile \u2018Supergirl\u2019 didn\u2019t meet our box office expectations, it\u2019s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in,\u201d Peter Safran, co-chairman and co-chief executive of DC Studios, told The New York Times. <\/p>\n

\u201cSupergirl\u201d follows DC\u2019s \u201cSuperman,\u201d which was considered a success after its release last summer, taking in a total of $619 million in global ticket sales. <\/p>\n

Why isn\u2019t \u2018Supergirl\u2019 taking off? <\/h3>\n

Observers have seen multiple possible reasons for the film\u2019s slow start, including so-called \u201csuperhero fatigue.\u201d But another reason could be that Supergirl as a character doesn\u2019t have the same draw as more well-known heroes like Superman. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis was always going to be a tough hurdle for DC and Warner Bros. because Supergirl isn\u2019t a character that has ever created an event-level blockbuster,\u201d analyst Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations told Variety. \u201cAudience perception of \u2018Supergirl\u2019 was not good. This is just a case of the film wasn\u2019t good enough to become an event.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others have noted that female-led superhero films in particular have struggled at the box office in recent years.<\/p>\n

\u201cFemale-led superhero movies have been rejected almost uniformly over the past five years or so, perhaps reflecting a resurgent misogyny among the core fan base, which is largely male,\u201d The New York Times wrote. <\/p>\n

\u201cSupergirl\u201d and its star, Alcock, have both been subjects of \u201conline abuse\u201d since even before the film was released, the Times noted. <\/p>\n
