Spencer Cox and first lady Abby Cox hope businesses and libraries across the state participate.<\/li>\n<li>The nostalgic event is being staged to champion lifelong reading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Remember those school read-a-thons where jammies-clad kids would arrive in class with pillows and their copies of \u201cHarry Potter\u201d or maybe \u201cDiary of a Wimpy Kid\u201d? <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=3494\">Extreme heat is forecast for Utah this weekend, but is monsoon relief on the other side of it?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then all the students would scout out quiet spots, stretch across classroom floors and spend the day doing nothing but reading.<\/p>\n<p>Still popular today, school read-a-thons are memorable diversions from day-to-day classroom routines \u2014 and both celebrations and promotions of student literacy.<\/p>\n<p>Utah Gov. Spencer Cox is himself a veteran of school read-a-thons at rural Fairview Elementary. The memories of read-a-thons \u2014 and Pizza Hut\u2019s ubiquitous BOOK IT! K-6 reading programs \u2014 bring a smile to his face.<\/p>\n<p>And now as part of his ongoing call for boosting literacy, Cox and his wife, first lady Abby Cox, are staging a Utah Statewide Read-A-Thon for all ages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Oct. 2, mark your calendars \u2014 we are having a statewide read-a-thon,\u201d said Cox at Thursday\u2019s \u201cShow Up for Teachers\u201d education conference at Mountain America Expo Center.<\/p>\n<p>And, he added, the upcoming Utah Statewide Read-A-Thon won\u2019t be just for kids arriving at school with their pillows and books.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want businesspeople in their pajamas and bringing their pillows and their books to work,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re hoping that every Utah business gives their workers at least an hour on Oct. 2 to bring a book, read a book and talk about a book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s get reading again.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Gov. Cox, meet the Count of Monte Cristo<\/h3>\n<p>Cox earlier touted the Utah Statewide Read-A-Thon during Tuesday\u2019s Honors in Education Gala.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the Oct. 2 event, he added, is simple: Everyone in the Beehive State should be reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need all of you to engage and start reading again if you\u2019ve stopped,\u201d said Cox. \u201cAnd if you are reading, keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor paused his gala message for a moment to ask all in his sprawling audience of educators to turn to the person at their side and ask what they would be reading on Oct. 2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd,\u201d he quipped, \u201cif you can\u2019t think of anything to read, I have a book coming out on Sept. 8. You\u2019re welcome to read it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=3492\">Webinar: Midterms and the state of America\u2019s political parties<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sitting next to Cox was Deseret News Publisher Burke Olsen, who told the governor he planned to spend the Utah Statewide Read-A-Thon with a copy of Yuval Levin\u2019s \u201cAmerican Covenant\u201d \u2014 a book on Cox\u2019s must-read list because of its examination of the Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>And what book will be in Cox\u2019s hand on Oct. 2? <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to read \u2018The Count of Monte Cristo,\u2019 because it\u2019s Abby\u2019s favorite book. I haven\u2019t read it, so I\u2019m going to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>A day of reading for husbands, wives \u2014 and the \u2018kiddos\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>During Thursday\u2019s Show Up for Teachers event in Sandy, Abby Cox broke the news of the Oct. 2 Utah Statewide Read-A-Thon to thousands of Utah educators.<\/p>\n<p>Literacy is a defining priority for both Gov. Cox and the first lady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to make sure that your kiddos are doing it \u2014 but also the businesses and the higher ed and the libraries and the communities,\u201d she said of the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going to see your husbands or your wives going to their businesses, and they\u2019re going to be in their pajamas, and they\u2019re going to get their pillows out, and we\u2019re going to have a day of reading,\u201d she said to cheers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really excited about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor has admitted that reading for pleasure has not always been a favorite diversion. \u201cI didn\u2019t like reading either, but let me tell you why it\u2019s so important \u2014 reading has the ability to change everything in your life,\u201d he told a group of Bryant Middle School students in February.<\/p>\n<p>Setting aside cellphones and video games to sit down with a book can be tough \u2014 but it\u2019s worth it, he promised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can actually rewire your brain in very, very positive ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Research, he added, confirms that students who read every day will do better in school. But that\u2019s just the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater on, you will actually make more money in your career,\u201d Cox promised the middle schoolers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll be happier throughout your life and you will have better and stronger families.
