In a press release dated July 9, the commission said the addictive nature of the apps is \u201cin breach of the Digital Services Act,\u201d and Meta could face fines if it doesn\u2019t make changes.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=3532\">Trump fires remaining members of election commission in latest change up of federal officials<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>What is the Digital Services Act?<\/h3>\n<p>The Digital Services Act is a piece of legislation that the European Union put adopted by the EU in 2022 and became fully enforceable in February 2024. The act \u201cemerged from mounting concernsregarding increasing platform influence over society, democratic processes and individual rights,&#8221; and it created a \u201cregulatory framework\u201d for social media. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe regulation\u2019s primary objective is to prevent illegal and harmful activities online while combating the spread of disinformation,\u201d its website says. <\/p>\n<p>The investigation into Meta began on May 16, 2024, to see if the company\u2019s apps comply with the European law.<\/p>\n<h3>The findings<\/h3>\n<p>The commission said the investigation found that \u201cMeta did not adequately assess the risks of its addictive design on the physical and mental well-being of users, including minors and vulnerable adults,\u201d per the press release.<\/p>\n<p>It pointed to features of the apps like \u201chighly personalized recommendations, autoplay and infinite scroll\u201d as inducing \u201cunhealthy habits and compulsive use.\u201d It also mentioned push notifications.<\/p>\n<p>The release also said, \u201cMeta disregarded available information about the time minors spend on Instagram or Facebook at night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=3530\">Trump declares ceasefire in Iran to be over as talks continue<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The commission found that Instagram and Facebook did have a few mitigation features put in place, like time management tools, but they could \u201cbe easily dismissed and do not lead to a meaningful reduction and control of the usage of the service.\u201d There are also tools parents could activate for their child\u2019s account, but they require \u201ctechnical expertise, as well as devote effort and time to understand them effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this stage of the investigation, the commission considers that Meta needs to implement design changes to both Instagram and Facebook,\u201d it said.
