By the time Nick Fradiani got to Utah, he had portrayed Neil Diamond 900 times.<\/p>\n

Nine hundred curtain calls for \u201cA Beautiful Noise,\u201d a jukebox musical that chronicles Diamond\u2019s rise to stardom and his present-day struggles navigating life with Parkinson\u2019s disease, means he\u2019d sung \u201cSweet Caroline\u201d 1,800 times \u2014 and that\u2019s just counting his onstage performances of the crowd-pleaser.<\/p>\n

Opening night of a short Salt Lake City run this past January marked show No. 901 for Fradiani. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf you told me I would still be doing it \u2026 it\u2019s kind of still shocking to me,\u201d the singer said the morning after his first show at the Eccles Theater. \u201cI obviously love the show very much to still be doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fradiani surpassed his 1,000th show several months later.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, he took his final bow as the Brooklyn born-and-raised, sequin-adorned superstar \u2014 concluding a roughly four-year chapter of his career that started as an understudy to Utah native Will Swenson on Broadway. <\/p>\n

In an interview with the Deseret News, Fradiani talked about his relationship with Diamond, the ongoing resurgence in the legendary artist\u2019s popularity and his own career post-\u201dA Beautiful Noise.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u2018I just felt like I was supposed to be a part of it\u2019<\/h3>\n

In the early days of the pandemic, a Facebook post about a Neil Diamond Broadway musical in the works caught Fradiani\u2019s eye. <\/p>\n

Fradiani had actually seen Diamond in concert when he was just 3 years old (his dad\u2019s a big fan). He didn\u2019t really follow the singer much after that, but thanks to a Christmas album that was a family staple, Diamond\u2019s rich baritone voice would seep into his childhood from time to time. <\/p>\n

As heard throughout his winning \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d run in 2015, Fradiani\u2019s natural singing voice is higher than Diamond\u2019s. But the longtime musician believed he could learn Diamond\u2019s catalog and play the part.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just felt like I was supposed to be a part of it,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t know how to explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He asked his music theater agent to look into the opportunity, and soon found out the lead role had already been filled by Will Swenson, who also grew up with a dad who\u2019s a Diamond fan.<\/p>\n

Swenson originated the role for a premiere run in Boston, and then took Diamond\u2019s gritty, gravelly sound to Broadway. The actor\/singer who is originally from Provo, Utah, portrayed Diamond for the musical\u2019s first year on Broadway, from the fall of 2022 to the fall of 2023.<\/p>\n

For that first year, Fradiani was Swenson\u2019s understudy and alternate. He regularly watched performances and continued to practice in case he needed to go on in a moment\u2019s notice. During that time, Fradiani and Swenson developed a friendship and played to each other\u2019s strengths. <\/p>\n

Fradiani gleaned insights into portraying the ups and downs of Diamond\u2019s life onstage from watching Swenson, who grew up in the theater world and appeared in \u201cThe Greatest Showman.\u201d Swenson, meanwhile, would seek guitar advice from Fradiani, a longtime musician and \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d winner.<\/p>\n

After about a year, Fradiani took over the vocally demanding role in \u201cA Beautiful Noise.\u201d He helmed the production through its Broadway closing in the summer of 2024, and then continued the role for a North American tour that concluded on July 12 in Kansas City, Missouri. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe reaction from the audiences across the country has been nothing short of kind of crazy,\u201d he said. \u201cAs much as Broadway is the pinnacle and everything, I think it\u2019s been a little bit more fun, honestly, to do this show on the road. I think it was kind of meant to be on the road. Neil loved to tour.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s very difficult for him to not be able to perform\u2019<\/h3>\n

Once he took over the role full time, Fradiani started getting to know Diamond a little better \u2014 both through portraying him onstage and working with him in person.<\/p>\n

Prior to \u201cA Beautiful Noise,\u201d he hadn\u2019t really known much about Diamond\u2019s personal life, including his marriages and struggles with record labels. Through the musical, he learned that Diamond is a private person who generally keeps to himself \u2014 making his flashy onstage persona all the more surprising.<\/p>\n

Fradiani also hadn\u2019t really known about the reach of Diamond\u2019s songwriting \u2014 including songs like The Monkees\u2019 \u201cI\u2019m a Believer\u201d and UB40\u2019s reggae rendition of \u201cRed Red Wine,\u201d which both hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. <\/p>\n

Offstage, though, is where he really learned the most about Diamond. <\/p>\n

The singer behind a dynamic catalog that includes No. 1 hits like \u201cCracklin\u2019 Rosie,\u201d \u201cSong Sung Blue\u201d and \u201cAmerica\u201d had a very hands-on approach to the musical and collaborated closely with the creative team. <\/p>\n

For Fradiani, Diamond\u2019s love of music and of touring, and the pain of no longer being able to do that, was palpable. It\u2019s a struggle that plays out in the musical, as a present-day version of Diamond grapples with his Parkinson\u2019s diagnosis through a series of therapy sessions, where he\u2019s encouraged to turn to his extensive songbook for guidance. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s very difficult for him to not be able to perform. If he didn\u2019t have the diagnosis, he would for sure still be performing, and I don\u2019t think this musical would be made, either.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very difficult for him to not be able to perform,\u201d Fradiani said. \u201cIf he didn\u2019t have the diagnosis, he would for sure still be performing, and I don\u2019t think this musical would be made, either.\u201d <\/p>\n

In portraying Diamond, Fradiani had to get more comfortable performing in the lower register of his vocal range. He lives in that part of his voice all the time now, he said, but it took a lot of work to get there.<\/p>\n

Diamond also has a unique way of phrasing words, a kind of intonation where he\u2019ll fall off of a phrase. Early on, Fradiani worked on mastering the style through Diamond\u2019s hit song \u201cI Am … I Said.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since taking on the role of Diamond, he\u2019s shifted from trying to copy him to channeling him. When he initially tried to sound exactly like Diamond, he said, he\u2019d listen to it back and think it sounded fake. Now, it\u2019s his own voice, but the audience also knows who he\u2019s representing.<\/p>\n

Over the past few years, he\u2019s entertained crowds of passionate Diamond fans on Broadway and throughout North America \u2014 and even Diamond himself when the singer showed up during a performance at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles last summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery stressful to portray a man while he\u2019s watching you,\u201d Fradiani said. \u201cI was very, very nervous that night.\u201d <\/p>\n

A few months after that appearance from Diamond \u2014 which of course ended with a \u201cSweet Caroline\u201d sing-along \u2014 Fradiani got the opportunity to accompany Diamond, who was then 84, for a performance at the Carousel Ball in Denver. <\/p>\n

\u201cHis voice is still quite powerful. … He still has his voice,\u201d Fradiani said. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty crazy how great his voice still is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, thanks in part to the musical and the popularity of the Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson film \u201cSong Sung Blue,\u201d even more people are starting to learn about Diamond\u2019s one-of-a-kind voice.<\/p>\n

\u2018There\u2019s never going to be another Neil\u2019 <\/h3>\n

The Neil Diamond fanbase is dedicated and enthusiastic. Fradiani got a glimpse of that every night he took the stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t understand how huge he was until I took over the show,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re real fans. I mean, they love him.\u201d <\/p>\n

Diamond is even bigger in other parts of the world: \u201cHe is literally the Elvis of Australia,\u201d Fradiani said. <\/p>\n

\u201cA Beautiful Noise\u201d launches the highly anticipated Australia leg of its tour in August, with Swenson reprising the role of Diamond for several months.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was really happy that he\u2019s getting another run at this,\u201d Fradiani said. \u201cWe share that Neil bond together.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the ongoing success of \u201cA Beautiful Noise,\u201d and the release of the film \u201cSong Sung Blue,\u201d which recently hit Netflix, Diamond\u2019s music seems to be surging in popularity.<\/p>\n

Much like Jackman\u2019s character in \u201cSong Sung Blue,\u201d Fradiani is eager for new audiences to learn about Diamond\u2019s repertoire beyond \u201cSweet Caroline.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s just so many incredible songs that he has,\u201d he said. \u201cI have such a strong connection to him now, and I feel so strongly for the guy, that I\u2019m just happy a new generation is getting to learn about his music.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s really cool that this is all happening \u2014 and that he\u2019s getting to see it,\u201d he continued. \u201cSometimes this stuff happens to people and they\u2019re gone. I\u2019m glad that he\u2019s witnessing all of this and getting the love and flowers that he deserves.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s never going to be another Neil.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019ll be connected to Neil forever\u2019 <\/h3>\n

When Fradiani won Season 14 of \u201cAmerican Idol,\u201d it became his defining career milestone \u2014 the thing most people knew him for. <\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t mind. Being crowned the champion, let alone making it on the show to begin with, hadn\u2019t been an easy feat. <\/p>\n

He\u2019d first auditioned when he was 21, but didn\u2019t make it past the show\u2019s producers in the preliminary round. Several years later, he tried out again with a vastly different result, winning the show at the age of 29. He\u2019s returned to the show a few times over the years to mentor contestants and perform.<\/p>\n

Now, a decade removed from his \u201cIdol\u201d win, Fradiani is finding \u201cA Beautiful Noise\u201d to be another pillar of his career. Many people who come to the show don\u2019t even realize he was on \u201cIdol\u201d until they read the playbill, he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s nice to have this other thing rather than just \u2018Idol\u2019 after all these years,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s really changed my life and opened up a lot of opportunities for me. It\u2019s just been a real magical four years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fradiani\u2019s solo career has slowed down substantially since \u201cA Beautiful Noise\u201d \u2014 he last released an album shortly before the musical\u2019s official Broadway premiere. <\/p>\n

He now plans to return to his solo career. He\u2019s already recorded a lot of music and is looking forward to putting it out on his own terms as an independent artist. <\/p>\n

But that doesn\u2019t mean he\u2019s done with Diamond\u2019s music. <\/p>\n

He\u2019s still not sick of singing \u201cSweet Caroline\u201d \u2014 which he\u2019s now performed more than 2,000 times \u2014 and he anticipates many more sing-alongs in the future. <\/p>\n

\u201cI see how happy it makes so many people at the end of the show. … Everyone\u2019s singing along, it\u2019s great,\u201d he said. \u201cSo even now when I play my own solo shows … whenever a show is lacking, I could just throw that in my set and I know I\u2019ll get the crowd back. It\u2019s great to have that song in your back pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n

But of course, having portrayed Diamond\u2019s life and music onstage over 1,000 times, Fradiani isn\u2019t just leaving the production with \u201cSweet Caroline.\u201d He also recently released his own version of \u201cI\u2019ve Been This Way Before\u201a\u201d one of his favorite of Diamond\u2019s songs that was a No. 1 hit on Billboard\u2019s Easy Listening chart. And he loves singing \u201cHeartlight\u201a\u201d which isn\u2019t in the musical but takes him back to his childhood when his dad would play it. <\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever not play his music, because it\u2019s become such a big part of me. I\u2019ll be connected to Neil forever.<\/p>\n

So while he\u2019s taking his final bow, ending a four-year era of wearing fringe jackets and red-beaded outfits, he definitely hasn\u2019t sung his last Diamond song.<\/p>\n
