{"id":3643,"date":"2026-07-13T21:08:39","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T21:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=3643"},"modified":"2026-07-13T21:08:39","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T21:08:39","slug":"the-nationwide-summer-blood-shortage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=3643","title":{"rendered":"The nationwide summer blood shortage"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>KEY POINTS<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The American Red Cross declared a blood shortage emergency following a 25% drop in the nationwide blood supply.<\/li>\n<li>Platelets, type O positive and type B negative blood are most needed in the shortage.<\/li>\n<li>Utahns can donate blood and receive a free movie ticket in return through July.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to the American Red Cross, \u201csomeone in the United States receives a blood transfusion every two seconds.\u201d But, hospitals nationwide are relying on less blood supplies for these transfusions because of a donation shortage. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=3641\">\u2018I would much rather our country look like this room\u2019: Erika Kirk reflects on Robinson hearing<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a press release Monday, the Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage nationwide as the need for blood \u201ccontinue(s) to outpace available blood supplies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Per the notice, \u201cThe Red Cross national blood supply has fallen 25% in the last month.\u201dThe organization points to busy schedules and travel plans as part of the reason for low blood donation in summer months. <\/p>\n<p>Benjamin Donner, executive director of the American Red Cross over Central and Southern Utah, said the recent heatwaves and wildfires plaguing the state also contribute to the low donations and contrasting high need for blood. He said when the weather is hot, air quality is poor and disasters are happening, people are less inclined to leave their house for humanitarian efforts like donating blood. But, right now is when it\u2019s needed most.<\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s needed nationwide<\/h3>\n<p>All blood types are needed, but platelets, O positive blood and B negative blood are in the highest demand, according to the Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p>The release said platelets can only be used within five days of donation, giving them high priority. <\/p>\n<p>AB positive blood is the universal platelet donor and anyone can use that type, but other types are also needed.<\/p>\n<p>Of O positive blood, the announcement said most people with a positive blood type can receive it, \u201cwhich includes more than 80% of the population.\u201d Alternatively, \u201cless than 2% of the population\u201d have B negative, and patients with that type can only receive that same type, or O negative. It\u2019s simple to download the Red Cross blood donor app, make an appointment and \u201cbe in and out in about an hour,\u201d he said. Then, \u201cyou walk out of there knowing you did something good today.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>Related<\/div>\n<div>When only a stranger can save your 3-year-old<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>And \u201cthe icing on the cake,\u201d according to Donner, is that after someone donates, they\u2019ll get a notification from the app when their blood is used, and they\u2019ll get to see what hospital \u2014 it could be in Utah, or it could be across the nation \u2014 it was used in.<\/p>\n<p>People 18 and up can donate blood, and teenagers age 16 and 17 can donate with parental permission.
