How did this happen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=3715\">Summer meteor showers begin to light up nighttime skies<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other articles have popped up in recent months with titles like, \u201cSmoking is cool again!\u201d, \u201cAre Cigarettes Back in Fashion?\u201d and \u201cCigarettes Get a Sequel: Hollywood\u2019s \u2018Cool\u2019 Bad Habit Is Back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Is this true? If those titles are shocking to you, here\u2019s a breakdown on what the media, scientific data and others have said about recent smoking trends.<\/p>\n<h3>Are cigarettes back?<\/h3>\n<p>Celebrities are the main force driving the cigarette resurgence. Recently, Kylie Jenner, Sabrina Carpenter, Dua Lipa, Gracie Abrams and Hailey Bieber, to name a few, have been seen on social media, magazine covers and in music videos holding or smoking cigarettes. <\/p>\n<p>Not all the celebrities have actually taken up smoking; some just posed with cigarettes to hop on the pop culture trend. <\/p>\n<p>Hollywood seems to be spotlighting smoking, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, the anti-smoking group Truth Initiative found that on-screen depiction of tobacco increased for the first time since 2002, with smoking shown in 80% of the 2025 Oscar best picture nominees,\u201d according to The Ankler.<\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s with this trend?<\/h3>\n<p>Multiple articles pointed to the aesthetic look and nostalgia of cigarettes as the reason they\u2019re coming back in style.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCigarettes feel like a vintage vice, an indulgence that belongs to a more elegant, less hideous time\u201a\u201d the Post\u2019s article said. \u201cBy comparison, vapes are modern, lame and ugly; no one, not even one of the biggest movie stars on the face of the earth, has ever looked cool sucking on one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Post\u2019s article included an editor\u2019s note saying it \u201cstands by the Surgeon General\u2019s warning on cigarettes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=3713\">Opinion: Utah has led the nation on upward mobility. Here\u2019s the next step<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are also social media accounts that exist solely to document celebrities\u2019 cigarette usage and capture the pop culture of smoking, like \u201ccigfluencers\u201d and \u201ccigarettes.\u201d Between the two, the accounts have nearly half a million followers.<\/p>\n<p>The 27-year-old behind the \u201ccigfluencers\u201d account, Jared Oviatt, told New York Post the trend is \u201calmost a rejection of wellness culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The health risks and trends<\/h3>\n<p>The danger associated with smoking cigarettes has not changed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, \u201cSmoking harms nearly every organ of the body and causes many diseases.\u201d More than 480,000 Americans die every year from smoking or secondhand smoke exposure. <\/p>\n<p>In Utah, adult cigarette smoking \u201creached a historic low of 5.8% in 2024,\u201d according to Utah\u2019s Department of Health and Human Services most recent data.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>Related<\/div>\n<div>Who\u2019s still smoking? Rates vary across states<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A University of California San Diego study published in June in the BMJ Public Health journal showed that from 1992-2022, people\u2019s willingness to restrict smoking in various settings has increased across all 50 states, and the average prevalence of smoking has decreased. <\/p>\n<p>The Utah Indoor Clean Air Act, passed in 1994, \u201cbans smoking in almost all government and private businesses in Utah.\u201d Back when the legislation was passed, Deseret News reported Utah was the first to enact a comprehensive statewide ban on smoking in public places.
