In 2025, Montana Fouts felt empty, a feeling that had persisted for two years.<\/p>\n

Her collegiate softball career at Alabama, where she pitched a perfect game against UCLA in the 2021 Women\u2019s College World Series and led the program to its first SEC tournament championship in 10 years, had ended in 2023.<\/p>\n

She grew up wanting to play in the Olympics and professionally, but after college, she didn\u2019t know what she wanted to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t really have that love for it anymore,\u201d Fouts recently told the Deseret News. \u201cI still loved the process \u2014 like, I love everything about softball. But I knew in that moment I wasn\u2019t loving it enough to do what I wanted to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, Fouts turned to God in prayer, asking him, \u201cIf this is what you want me to do, if this is my calling \u2026 please help me because I don\u2019t have it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just remember all of a sudden, I couldn\u2019t get enough of it,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was like, not addicted in a bad way, but it was like I was just itching to go pitch. And I didn\u2019t even have a season to play yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fouts felt the same passion she felt for the sport that she did when she was 8 years old. She described it as a gift from God.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is something that I really want to do and always have wanted to do, and you can\u2019t do it without that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Two years after turning to God in prayer, Fouts is on the threshold of winning a back-to-back AUSL championship, having won the inaugural 2025 Athletes Unlimited Softball League championship with the Talons and becoming the league\u2019s most dominant pitcher this season.<\/p>\n

Fouts leads the AUSL with 53 strikeouts and seven wins for the No. 1 ranked Utah Talons. Her 2.56 ERA is sixth best in the league. She also set the AUSL\u2019s single-game strikeout record, shutting down 12 batters.<\/p>\n

And she\u2019s doing it all while proudly living and sharing her faith.<\/p>\n

Building a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ<\/h3>\n

At Alabama, softball had taken over Fouts\u2019 life and consumed her identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t like I was doing anything wrong,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was just like, \u2018Softball is me, I am softball.\u2019 And so then, when the outcome wasn\u2019t going my way, then it was just like life didn\u2019t feel right. I didn\u2019t feel like I was me at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fouts was born and raised Christian and thought she had a relationship with Jesus Christ, but in that moment, she realized she needed to dive \u201cdeeper into that relationship with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like he used something that I was placing as an idol to show me that that\u2019s not what\u2019s going to make me truly happy, that\u2019s not what\u2019s going to bring the best out of me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

After that, Fouts began \u201cto chase him\u201d and stopped trying to follow her own plan for her life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I realized that\u2019s when I was truly happy was just because I am loved regardless,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Knowing that \u201cit\u2019s already written and it\u2019s already won\u201d by Christ, Fouts said, allows her to play fearless on the mound.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether you win, whether you lose, we\u2019re going to take things and learn regardless, but you\u2019re exactly where you\u2019re supposed to be,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel like as long as you have your eyes on the prize, which is him, and glorifying him, then he\u2019s going to take care of the rest.\u201d<\/p>\n

When she looks back on what unfolded since her prayer for help last year, she can see God\u2019s involvement.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, I\u2019m going to prepare to stay healthy and to get stronger and all of the above, but I can\u2019t do that without him,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, when I sit back and look at like where we\u2019re at now, it\u2019s just like, I don\u2019t know. I\u2019m not in charge of the plan anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

And she said she \u201cwouldn\u2019t want it any other way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018I need to share his love\u2019<\/h3>\n

Fouts sees glorifying God and sharing his love, which she described as the \u201cgreatest love of all time,\u201d as her real \u201cjob.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know everything, I\u2019m not the smartest, I don\u2019t read the most, but I feel like I am very passionate about how he saved my life,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to take the opportunities that he gives me to be in front of people, to talk to people, to sign autographs, whatever it is, and to share his love, whether it\u2019s just through me. Like, we don\u2019t have to be talking directly about Jesus. But I think that\u2019s my biggest goal is to love other people, I need to share his love, and what he\u2019s given me, I know that he wants to give to everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fouts acknowledged that maintaining a relationship with God is an ongoing process. One way she tries to do so is through prayer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like I have a continuous prayer throughout the day that\u2019s just like me talking to him, just like as a friend and a father,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Prayer and journaling help Fouts slow down and make time for God in her life. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think our world is very fast,\u201d she said. \u201cThings are like life-changing every single day, and we don\u2019t even realize it. So, I really think just being able to slow down and talk to him, even when you feel like he\u2019s not there, he is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fouts and the Utah Talons have already clinched a playoff berth as they pursue a back-to-back AUSL championship. <\/p>\n

\u201cJust really proud of some of the wins \u2014 all of them \u2014 but some of them that maybe we weren\u2019t supposed to (win), like maybe we were behind and it called for a walk-off or like a silly little play to score like one or two runs that ended up winning us a game,\u201d Fouts said. \u201cI feel like that\u2019s what I\u2019m most proud of because that\u2019s what we always talk about: We\u2019re built for this, the tough moments, and I\u2019m really proud of us for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Utah currently holds the No. 1 seed and, if results hold, will earn an automatic spot in the best-of-three championship, which starts July 25. The Nos. 2 and 3 seeds will play a single-elimination game on July 23 to determine who advances to the championship.<\/p>\n
