The misleading video was AI-generated, and the customers were not real. <\/p>\n<p>Another AI ad promoted an herbal supplement it claimed would \u201ctreat kidney disease better than medication.\u201d Claims like those are dangerous to vulnerable consumers who don\u2019t know better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAds like these would be illegal on U.S. television, but on the internet, they face little enforcement,\u201d the Times said. <\/p>\n<h3>Targeting Americans<\/h3>\n<p>The fake health ads are targeted at older American women, according to the Times. They are created around the world, with a large share of the production in China. Vivi Yi, an AI marketing CEO for a company in China, told the Times her employees produce about 1,200 AI ads per day. She said the employees watch American TV shows and movies so they can make the content of their AI ads feel \u201cauthentic and local.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ads cost $10 per video to produce, Yi said. They promote various products on TikTok Shop like supplements, toys and electronics. <\/p>\n<p>Yi said the agency has contracts with supplement companies, and the Times said she acknowledged that \u201chealth products need to be handled with extra caution on TikTok.\u201d For example, the ads must use phrases like \u201cweight management\u201d instead of \u201close weight,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=3924\">ICE detention hits record high in June despite mounting criticism<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Twisting words<\/h3>\n<p>AI ads often feature fake customers, doctors or \u201cEastern medical gurus,\u201d the Times said. But they can also feature real people saying things they didn\u2019t actually say. <\/p>\n<p>CBS News told the story of Rachel Goldman, a clinical psychologist and assistant professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, who was used to falsely promote a product with AI. <\/p>\n<p>Goldman began appearing on \u201cOprah Daily\u201d in 2023 as an expert panelist on obesity. Videos later showed up on social media depicting Goldman in a 2023 episode of the show, seemingly saying, \u201cThe pink salt trick it\u2019s 100% natural and free of side effects.\u201d Goldman never said that. Her words were twisted using AI to create a \u201cdeepfake\u201d video endorsing a product related to the pink salt trick, a weight-loss fad popular on social media in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Goldman told CBS News that many people, including a relative, fell for the deepfake and messaged her about the pink salt diet. Those who bought the product the video advertised also messaged her, saying they were scammed.<\/p>\n<h3>What regulations are in place?<\/h3>\n<p>In December 2025, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a law that \u201crequires persons who produce or create an advertisement to identify if it includes AI-generated synthetic performers,\u201d according to the New York governor\u2019s website. It took effect on June 9, 2026. <\/p>\n<p>Some states have AI laws in place, but none are specifically related to advertising like New York\u2019s law. There is no comprehensive federal law regulating AI-generated advertising. <\/p>\n<p>According to the Times, TikTok said it bans accounts on its app that make misleading health claims, and Meta labels AI-generated content. Some videos slip through the cracks, though.
