Case in point: the conversation about “Blue MAGA.”

What is “Blue MAGA?” Nobody seems to know, but people are using the term — as a pejorative.

This is a change from last year, when Rep. Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California, was saying that his party needs a “Blue MAGA” movement, which he later loosely defined as “economic patriotism.” The idea was that Democrats needed to reclaim their party for the working man and woman.

As Gitanjali Poonia summarized Khanna’s thinking for the Deseret News last year, “He’s used several names, but it’s all the same agenda: Bring back manufacturing to America, and better jobs for working and middle class Americans.”

There are far worse ideas on the table, and this certainly worked for Donald Trump as a campaign strategy.

But somehow between then and now, “Blue MAGA” has become an insult, according to a recent piece in The New York Times, which noted that the term is “a call-out increasingly used online by young progressives,” particularly those who scorn more conventional Democrats and their politics.

YouTuber Hasan Piker told the Times that “Blue MAGA is about cultlike loyalty to the Democratic Party, but unlike MAGA, it isn’t centered around one person. It’s centered around the image of a party that consultants and lobbyists have carefully crafted.”

This would be the same Hasan Piker who, over the weekend, dressed in the style of Mao Zedong and told a gathering of college students: “No more to Trumpism, but no more to the Democrats who compromise, who conciliate, and who betray us. … No more to the Democrats who will collaborate and cooperate with the fascists, who will fund ICE, who will fund Israel, who will help poison the planet, who will stiff workers and help bosses.”

To every Democratic politician touting DSA primary wins as proof the party is a ‘big tent’: listen closely to antisemitic Twitch influencer Hasan Piker at this weekend’s College Democrats of America convention.

He is not ‘energizing the base’ —he’s declaring war on any Democrats… pic.twitter.com/cmVNAaKFb5

— Gerald Posner (@geraldposner) July 20, 2026

So in those terms, “Blue MAGA” represents establishment Democrats like James Carville, who are decrying the state of the party and blaming progressives for it. “Is their solution to beat Republicans to run against Republicans? It turns out some of the best-known stories about crashed aliens and other close encounters may have been planted by the government as a diversion.
