{"id":4047,"date":"2026-07-24T20:37:30","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T20:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=4047"},"modified":"2026-07-24T20:37:30","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T20:37:30","slug":"4-disease-outbreaks-making-people-sick-this-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=4047","title":{"rendered":"4 disease outbreaks making people sick this summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>KEY POINTS<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Four illnesses have made headlines this summer: Ebola, measles, cyclosporiasis and hantavirus.<\/li>\n<li>Cyclosporiasis and measles are still very much a concern.<\/li>\n<li>While the cruise ship hantavirus outbreak is over, people need to take precautions where there might be rodent droppings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Four distinctively different illnesses have each made lots of headlines this summer: a hantavirus outbreak among passengers on a cruise ship that left folks adrift at sea for extra days and then sent some to quarantine; a measles outbreak that has featured Utah in a starring role; a nasty parasite-caused intestinal illness called cyclosporiasis that\u2019s likely from fresh produce and an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has killed more than 1,000 people and infected visitors from different countries.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=4045\">Data centers are Congress\u2019 newest obsession<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the latest news on each of them.<\/p>\n<h3>Ebola outbreak<\/h3>\n<p>The Ebola outbreak is still expanding. United Nations News said it\u2019s the fastest-growing outbreak of Ebola ever recorded and that as of July 19, Congo officials recorded 2,423 confirmed cases, including 967 deaths and 469 recoveries. Al Jazeera cited sources that put the number above 1,000. <\/p>\n<p>The province of Ituri is the epicenter with 90% of cases and 80% of deaths, though it has spread to five provinces, Dr. Thierno Bald\u00e9, World Health Organization incident manager, told the UN news outlet. He said the \u201cBundibugyo virus behind this latest Ebola outbreak is also extending its reach to new areas in the eastern region, where chronic instability and the threat of conflict have combined with highly mobile and often displaced populations to create ideal conditions for the infection to spread<i>.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The disease can arise from four different Ebola virus strains and the Bundibugyo strain has no vaccine. Ebola only spreads by contact with the bodily fluids of those who are infected as well as surfaces, bedding or other items that came in contact with those bodily fluids. It can also be spread by contact with animals, such as bats and nonhuman primates, that are infected, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>As Deseret News earlier reported, \u201c\u2018Dry symptoms\u2019 like fever, aches, pain and fatigue come first, but as the illness progresses, \u2018wet symptoms\u2019 typically occur, including diarrhea, vomiting and what the CDC describes as \u2018unexplained bleeding.\u2019 The latter includes nosebleeds and sometimes vomiting blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once someone is exposed, it can take as long as three weeks to develop symptoms, though eight to 10 days is average. Occasionally, symptoms show up after a couple of days.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization describes care as largely supportive.<\/p>\n<p>As of July 23, no cases of Ebola disease have been confirmed in the United States because of this outbreak, according to the CDC. And the chance of it spreading to the U.S. from this outbreak is deemed to be \u201clow.\u201d But it continues to rage in Congo and travelers are advised not to go there at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>However, two U.S. citizens were infected and treated in Germany \u2014 a doctor who was evacuated in May and a humanitarian worker this month.<\/p>\n<h3>Hantavirus cruise outbreak<\/h3>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced in late June \u201cthe successful conclusion of the federal public health response to the Hantavirus exposure event associated with the M\/V Hondius cruise ship.\u201d The notice said that the final 42-day monitoring period ended June 21 and no Americans are under public health monitoring for Hantavirus exposure.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s believed that people were exposed to the rare Andes strain of hantavirus before they ever got on the cruise ship. Thirteen people were infected and three of them died, although in only two of the deaths was there lab confirmation. <\/p>\n<p>Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the viruses cause diseases including hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which attacks the lungs and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome which can attack the kidneys. <\/p>\n<p>Hantavirus spreads most often through direct contact with rodent droppings, urine or saliva. But the cruise ship outbreak raised the possibility of rare human-to-human transmission, as well. The illness always originates with infected rodents and there have been many cases over the years, including some in Utah, where people are infected because they came across rodent droppings while cleaning garages and sheds. One of the most recent noted cases where hantavirus made the news was the death of Betsy Arakawa, Gene Hackman\u2019s wife, who died of the pulmonary version. He died a week later of an unrelated heart condition.<\/p>\n<p>Per Global Virus Network regarding the cruise ship outbreak, \u201cPreliminary epidemiologic assessments indicate that initial exposure likely occurred prior to boarding, with the possibility of limited onboard secondary transmission under close-contact conditions.\u201d Global health authorities emphasized the overall risk to the traveling public was low.<\/p>\n<p>The ship was turned away, extending the cruise, for a time before it was allowed to dock. And once it did dock, travelers underwent supervised quarantines. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=4043\">Former collegiate phenom Allie Ostrander wins Deseret News 10K<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Measles outbreak<\/h3>\n<p>Measles, which had been considered eliminated in the U.S. since 2000, has made a big comeback, reaching a 35-year high in the U.S., according to the University of Minnesota\u2019s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, commonly called CIDRAP. As Deseret News earlier reported, the U.S. could lose its status as a country considered measles-free.<\/p>\n<p>As of July 22, per CIDRAP, the \u201cUnited States has already recorded 2,295 measles cases this year, a number not seen since 1991, according to <u>new data<\/u> published on the Johns Hopkins University measles tracker.&#8221; And the year\u2019s not over. Last year, there were 2,289 cases total. And that was considered very high.<\/p>\n<p>Utah has been at the heart of the outbreak, with cases on both sides of the border with Arizona, too. So far, though measles sometimes kills, no one has died in the U.S. from this outbreak, though there were hospitalizations. <\/p>\n<p>There are also complications, some serious. Patients can develop pneumonia and other medical issues.<\/p>\n<p>Utah officials in a New England Journal of Medicine Evidence article noted 711 cases in the last 12 months, 518 of them this year alone. Health officials noted that 90% of those with measles were not vaccinated and three of five hospitalized patients who were vaccinated had \u201csevere immunocompromising conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Per CIDRAP, Utah is far from alone. The Los Angeles Times this week reported a \u201csurge\u201d of cases among children and young adults in California. <\/p>\n<p>According to The Washington Post, \u201cThe latest milestone underscores how the country has entered a new phase in its battle with measles, with repeated new infections of the deadly disease igniting sustained outbreaks in multiple states rather than staying concentrated in a few undervaccinated communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Measles is a highly contagious virus that can linger in the air for a couple of hours, so people can pass through and not even know they were exposed. Besides misery from the rash and the respiratory aspects, there are possible complications, including one that\u2019s very rare but also deadly. Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is a degenerative nervous system disease that shows up way down the road, years after folks think they\u2019ve recovered from measles.<\/p>\n<h3>Cyclosporiasis outbreak<\/h3>\n<p>A parasite called Cyclospora, which is contained in human feces, is responsible for a gastrointestinal illness called cyclosporiasis that is currently gripping parts of the U.S. It happens when people eat or drink contaminated food and beverages, most often from produce that was irrigated with feces-contaminated water and then was not properly prepared before being consumed. <\/p>\n<p>As Deseret News has reported, its most dominant feature is explosive diarrhea and misery. Symptoms, which usually appear within a week or two of exposure, include \u201cwatery diarrhea, sometimes frequent, along with cramping, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue and low-grade fever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Health officials emphasized that it doesn\u2019t spread from one person to another.<\/p>\n<p>According to The New York Times, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration just found a new outbreak of cyclosporiasis, though it didn\u2019t say where. The FDA did say that at least 72 people had gotten sick, per a post on its website this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe additional outbreak comes in the midst of the nation\u2019s worst year on record for the intestinal illness,\u201c according to the Times. The article said that the FDA is already trying to sort out five other clusters of the illness, including a big one in Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky that has made at least 1,644 people sick.
