When her friend approached her about interpreting \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d into ASL for Netflix, Jenni Yang had some serious hesitation. <\/p>\n

The film was a global sensation. Yang, who is deaf, had a long background in teaching ASL and being an educational interpreter, but she had never done work with TV shows or movies. \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d would be an extreme jump \u2014 one that would take her entirely out of her comfort zone.<\/p>\n

But her friend, Jojo Savea, wouldn\u2019t take no for an answer. <\/p>\n

Savea, a deaf Pacific Islander who lives in Layton, Utah, had previously interpreted Disney\u2019s \u201cMoana\u201d \u2014 a feat that placed her on the red carpet with Dwayne \u201cThe Rock\u201d Johnson at the live-action premiere in early July.<\/p>\n

Now it was Yang\u2019s turn to be in the spotlight, Savea said, reminding her friend that it wasn\u2019t just about being fluent in ASL. There was a lived experience Yang could speak to \u2014 her parents had immigrated to the United States from Korea more than 40 years ago, and Yang herself had last been in Korea in 2006. <\/p>\n

Yang thought about how that kind of representation was important for kids to see onscreen. While growing up, she had struggled and strived to find the balance between learning both English and Korean while navigating her deafness.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe importance of accessibility with all three different cultures was something that pushed me and influenced me to do this movie, and the reason why I got into the interpreting field,\u201d Yang recently told the Deseret News on a Zoom call. <\/p>\n

So she watched \u201cKPop Demon Hunters.\u201d She immediately felt comfortable with the Korean culture and the characters, but had to work hard at keeping up with the film\u2019s fast and energetic pace. She watched it over and over again until she felt confident she could pull it off.<\/p>\n

People she hadn\u2019t talked to in years excitedly reached out to tell her they watched her interpret the film via SignUp Media, a free Google Chrome extension that provides ASL interpretation for streaming platforms like Disney+ and Netflix.<\/p>\n

To date, \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d is one of SignUp Media\u2019s top-viewed interpretations.<\/p>\n

Now, Yang and Savea are part of a new and massive undertaking from SignUp Media to translate 200 hours of kids and family content on Netflix \u2014 a partnership between the two platforms that has led to \u201cthe largest ASL translation effort in entertainment history,\u201d according to a news release from SignUp. <\/p>\n

For this project, which includes franchises like \u201cPokemon\u201d and \u201cThe Magic School Bus,\u201d the Utah-based duo specifically worked together to interpret 32 hours of the popular nursery rhyme show \u201cCoComelon.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is a kind of accessibility both Yang and Savea wish they\u2019d had when they were kids. But as they worked to bring the songs to life through ASL, they both found their inner child ready and waiting.<\/p>\n

Revisiting \u2014 and relearning \u2014 nursery rhymes<\/h3>\n

As a kid, Yang struggled to understand nursery rhymes. \u201cThe Itsy Bitsy Spider\u201d hand motions didn\u2019t make sense to her. The story of Jack and Jill was confusing. She couldn\u2019t figure out what the Farmer in the Dell was doing. <\/p>\n

Now, as the mom of an almost 2-year-old, taking on the \u201cCoComelon\u201d project appealed to her because she wanted to learn the songs she\u2019d missed out on \u2014 and enjoy them with her own son. <\/p>\n

She\u2019d read on online mom forums that she should be wary of the show because it could be overstimulating. As she watched \u201cCoComelon\u201d to see what it was all about, she understood those concerns. But at the same time, she also found herself finally understanding some of those nursery rhymes that had been so confusing to her as a child.<\/p>\n

\u201cThinking back to when I was younger, I didn\u2019t have the accessibility to understand what was being sung, the storytelling or anything like that,\u201d Yang said. \u201cAnd so watching it now with captions, I was like, \u2018Oh, that makes sense now!\u2019 \u2026 It allowed me to be able to watch it and actually understand how to sing that to my baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Savea, who has worked as a deaf mentor for children ages 0 through 3, joining the \u201cCoComelon\u201d project excited her because she wanted to help provide more access for deaf kids who are at such a formative age. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just something I absolutely had to do,\u201d Savea said with the aid of an interpreter. \u201cOften people say things like, \u2018Oh, why can\u2019t kids just watch the captions?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018You do realize that babies and little kids can\u2019t read yet, right?\u2019 That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to give them that ASL access first. ASL is also its own language; it is completely separate from English.\u201d<\/p>\n

Together, from Yang\u2019s basement studio in South Jordan, the pair interpreted 32 hours of \u201cCoComelon.\u201d But even more hours went into the behind-the-scenes prep work \u2014 learning the rhythms, making it visually engaging for kids and, in some cases, trying to find or create signs for made-up words like \u201cSkidamarink.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOften people say things like, \u2018Oh, why can\u2019t kids just watch the captions?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018You do realize that babies and little kids can\u2019t read yet, right?\u2019 That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to give them that ASL access first.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014 \u00a0Jojo Savea<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They worked hard to keep their energy levels up. The last thing they wanted was for kids to be bored while watching them. <\/p>\n

Savea\u2019s inner child would especially come out while signing \u201cWheels on the Bus.\u201d Yang, meanwhile, liked signing for the dinosaur-obsessed character Cody, who reminded her of her own son. <\/p>\n

Throughout the intensive process, Yang reminded herself not to get too bogged down by nerves or the magnitude of the project. Above everything else, it was most important to have fun \u2014 to convey happiness. It was a kids show, after all. <\/p>\n

But their work doesn\u2019t end after 32 hours of \u201cCoComelon.\u201d For Yang and Savea, this is only scratching the surface of possibility. <\/p>\n

\u2018It doesn\u2019t end with \u201cCoComelon\u201d\u2019 <\/h3>\n

When Yang was a kid, her parents initially enrolled her in an oral program that focused on spoken language rather than sign language. During recess, she would watch with fascination as some of the kids signed to each other.<\/p>\n

By the time Yang got to the fourth or fifth grade, her parents enrolled her in a class that mixed sign language with regular school activities. <\/p>\n

\u201cI completely understood things on a different level,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Both Yang and Savea know firsthand the added knowledge that can come with ASL access, which is why they don\u2019t want their work to stop with \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d or \u201cMoana\u201d or \u201cCoComelon.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t end with \u2018CoComelon,\u2019\u201d Savea said. \u201cJenni and I didn\u2019t have anything like this back then, so it\u2019s amazing now that kids have this. But there\u2019s a lot left to do. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey should have full access to all of it,\u201d she continued. \u201cThey should be able to go right through and pick what they want to watch and have that same accessibility. They shouldn\u2019t have to pick and choose depending on whether or not there\u2019s ASL available.\u201d <\/p>\n

Last fall, Yang faced a personal setback when she developed Bell\u2019s palsy, which led to some temporary facial paralysis. <\/p>\n

Although the condition gradually improved over the next few months, it did make her somewhat uncertain about tackling the \u201cCoComelon\u201d project \u2014 until Savea reminded her that it didn\u2019t matter as long as her enthusiastic personality shone through.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not just only signing for yourself \u2014\u00a0you\u2019re signing for everyone else.”<\/p>\n

So, just as she had worked through her initial hesitation with \u201cKPop Demon Hunters,\u201d Yang got on board for \u201cCoComelon\u201d and found her inner child. <\/p>\n

And now she\u2019s ready to keep going.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just about being comfortable with putting yourself out there,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause you\u2019re not just only signing for yourself \u2014 you\u2019re signing for everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n
