That was in 1976 \u2014 50 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt my own public high school, the highest achievers \u2014 the valedictorian, the editor of the school newspaper, the winner of the poetry award \u2014 were all boys. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot anymore. Things have changed profoundly,\u201d said Sax, a physician and psychologist who earlier this month presented at Utah\u2019s Show Up for Teachers Conference.<\/p>\n<p>An author of several parenting books \u2014 including the recently updated \u201cBoys Adrift\u201d \u2014 Sax spoke with the Deseret News regarding an educational question vexing Utah and the nation: Why are so many boys and young men struggling to succeed in school?<\/p>\n<p>When Sax recently visited a middle school, he took a peek at the honor roll posted in the hallway. There were 22 names on the list. Only three were boys. While meeting with a group of students at that middle school, he asked the boys why there were so few males on the honor roll.<\/p>\n<p>One of the boys raised his hand, offering this answer: Girls are smarter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd (he was) not joking,\u201d said Sax. \u201cHe believes this. He\u2019s grown up in a world of \u2018Girls rule \u2014 boys drool\u2019 and \u2018Girls go to college to get more knowledge \u2014 boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the world he lives in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked what\u2019s behind such academic gender shifts over the past few decades, Sax references the 1994 book \u201cFailing at Fairness: How Our Schools Cheat Girls,\u201d which detailed gender bias in schools that left girls with classroom disadvantages.<\/p>\n<p>Such research prompted changes in how instruction was formulated and delivered in American classrooms \u2014 and now it\u2019s the boys who are being underserved, asserted Sax.<\/p>\n<p>Today, in every K-12 grade level, girls are earning higher marks than boys \u2014 and by a wide margin, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American Institute of Boys and Men recently published the male-female ratio in each of the 10 percentiles of grade-point average,\u201d he said. \u201cIn the top 10 percentiles \u2014 the kids who are the top 10% of students in the United States \u2014 girls now outnumber boys by 2 to 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that academic performance gap, he added, is seen across K-12 curricula \u2014 including math, science, and career and technical education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow if the gender gap was growing because girls are doing better, I don\u2019t think that would be a problem. That would be cause for celebration,\u201d said Sax. \u201cBut the gender gap is growing not because girls are doing better \u2014 but because boys are doing worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Boys have little interest in picking up a book for fun<\/h3>\n<p>To illustrate his claim of dramatic slips in motivation for boys in the classroom, Sax points to surveys from 40 years ago asking American teenagers if they read for fun. The girls outnumbered the boys, but the difference was small.<\/p>\n<p>But a recent national study showed the \u201creading-for-pleasure\u201d gap between girls and boys is now a chasm. Reading for fun has become a gender identity marker.<\/p>\n<p>But the recent survey also reveals that the reading gap isn\u2019t widening because girls are reading more, explained Sax. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGirls are reading significantly less today than they were reading 40 years ago. But boys have stopped reading altogether.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No surprise, the differences between male and female educational engagement and motivation don\u2019t end with high school graduation. Women at four-year colleges in the United States now make up approximately 60% of enrollment.<\/p>\n<p>That holds true for completing a bachelor\u2019s degree as well. Twenty years ago, the number of men and women 25 to 34 years old holding college degrees was even; now there\u2019s a 10-point gap favoring women, according to Pew Research Center.<\/p>\n<h3>Sax: The societal realities of \u2018educational assortative mating\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>When Sax sounds the alarm about the growing gender gaps in the classroom to educators, their reaction, he said, is often hostility or indifference.<\/p>\n<p>A common response: It\u2019s no big deal if the gender pendulum has swung the other way in recent decades. Men still control most of the money and most of the power. Why should it matter if boys are doing worse in schools than girls?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe answer,\u201d responded Sax, \u201cis educational assortative mating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those three words \u2014 educational assortative mating \u2014 basically mean a woman will typically choose a man whose educational level is equal or greater than her own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a woman is going to marry a man, she\u2019s looking for a man who is as accomplished and as motivated as she is,\u201d asserted Sax. \u201cAnd there are not enough good men to go around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That tendency, he added, is not confined to women who have earned a college degree. And it\u2019s happening in countries far beyond the United States and is a major factor in declining marriage and fertility rates.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmovershub.com\/?p=4350\">U.S. second-home mortgages are up for the first time since the pandemic<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>A call for \u2018snowball zones\u2019 <\/h3>\n<p>Schools have changed over the past several decades in ways that have had the unintended outcome of disengaging boys from school, said Sax. Classrooms have become \u201cunfriendly to boys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To illustrate, Sax points to K-12 schools in the U.S. that prohibit tossing snowballs. Designated \u201csnowball zones\u201d were once common on the American playground. But that\u2019s changed because of liability risks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut as I\u2019ve shared with American schools, don\u2019t criminalize boyhood,\u201d he said. \u201cBoys doing things that boys have always done \u2014 throwing snowballs, drawing pictures of weapons, writing stories where people get killed \u2014 now can get you a disciplinary referral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of today\u2019s American educators, added Sax, have been taught that gender is a social construct and that teachers should not use the term \u201cboys and girls\u201d because it reinforces the heteronormative binary \u2014 or loosely, the view that one is either male or female.<\/p>\n<p>The consequence of such beliefs, asserted Sax, are disengaged boys.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, schools that are seeing motivated boys in the classroom are often those that foster and encourage competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can boost achievement and motivation for boys without making school unfriendly to girls,\u201d said Sax. \u201cYou have, say, a snowball-throwing tournament. If girls sign up, that\u2019s great. Some girls love to throw snowballs. Some boys don\u2019t. That\u2019s fine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can make the school more friendly to boys without making it unfriendly to girls. The snowball tournament is open to everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Do gender differences matter in the classroom?<\/h3>\n<p>A boy\u2019s negative attitude about school, warned Sax, often starts early, long before he ever steps on a college campus. \u201cAnd we can change that easily and at zero cost \u2014 you just have to have school leaders who understand the problem and care about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sax advocates for \u201cgender-aware\u201d instructional strategies in K-12 schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best way to get boys excited about Emily Dickinson is very different from the best way to get girls excited about Emily Dickinson,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd the best way to get girls excited about computer coding is very different from the best way to get boys excited about computer coding. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you put in place gender-aware instructional strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When educators ignore gender differences, Sax added, they ultimately reinforce gender stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you understand gender differences, you can break down gender stereotypes. And that same boy who loves football and video games will love \u2018Jane Eyre\u2019 and will love Emily Dickinson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An effective teacher, explained Sax, will recognize gender differences when, say, preparing a middle-school history lesson about the Civil War. While many boys will be drawn into the accounts of men who fought battles and made key decisions, many middle school girls will respond to lessons that connect them to the experiences of Civil War-era girls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen how well this works,\u201d said Sax. \u201cIf you understand gender differences, you can break down gender stereotypes and boost achievement and motivation for every girl and every boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The dangers of porn, AI and the manosphere<\/h3>\n<p>Originally published in 2007, Sax\u2019s \u201cBoys Adrift\u201d originally identified five factors resulting in unmotivated, underachieving boys and young men: schools unfriendly to boys, video games, medications for ADHD, environmental toxins and the devaluation of masculinity.<\/p>\n<p>A revised edition of \u201cBoys Adrift\u201d \u2014 scheduled for a September release \u2014 adds a sixth factor: the combined forces of pornography, AI, and the \u201cmanosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The growing pervasiveness of pornography and AI are reshaping today\u2019s male understanding and expectations of sex, said Sax. Consequently, women are increasingly hesitant to form intimate relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Young women, he declared, \u201care sick of these boys raised on porn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are failing in our most basic obligation as a culture to raise boys to be men that women want to be with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Sax works with parents of boys, he counsels them to \u201clock down the manosphere\u201d that can prompt anger and disenfranchisement. And, he added, moms and dads must be willing to be \u201cthe evil parent.\u201d Say no to the porn and the manosphere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to say \u2018No\u2019 to the porn and the manosphere. Lock it down so your son can\u2019t access this stuff,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you also have to say \u2018Yes.\u2019 You have to offer your son a healthier culture; a healthier community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sax noted that Utahns are fortunate to have an abundance of \u201chealthier culture\u201d options.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurn off the screens and go for a hike,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople come from all around the world to Utah to do what people here can do. There\u2019s so much fun stuff to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuild connections with your kid by climbing a mountain or sailing on a lake.
