\u201cSpider-Man\u201d is swinging into theaters this weekend \u2014 and it\u2019s already breaking records set by previous Marvel blockbusters. <\/p>\n

During preview showings Wednesday and Thursday, \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d earned $72 million, more than any other movie in history, per Variety. That record was previously held by the Marvel juggernaut \u201cAvengers: Endgame,\u201d which made $60 million during previews and still holds the record for the biggest opening weekend of all time. <\/p>\n

This also means that \u201cSpider-Man\u201d has outstripped both \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d and \u201cToy Story 5,\u201d which had previously been at the top of preview earnings this year, with $17.6 million and $17.5 million, respectively, according to The Hollywood Reporter. <\/p>\n

\u201cBrand New Day\u201d is expected to earn between $260 million and $280 million during its opening weekend, which would put it in second place behind \u201cEndgame\u201d and ahead of the last \u201cSpider-Man\u201d film, \u201cNo Way Home,\u201d for the largest opening weekend, Variety reported. <\/p>\n

Audiences are racing to \u201cBrand New Day,\u201d and, for the most part, it appears they\u2019re liking what they\u2019re seeing. It has a 98% audience score, based on over 5,000 reviews, on Rotten Tomatoes as of Friday morning, while the critics\u2019 score is a more measured but still impressive 90%. <\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a look at what critics are saying about \u201cSpider-Man.\u201d <\/p>\n

Critics\u2019 reviews for \u2018Spider-Man: Brand New Day\u2019 <\/h3>\n

\u201cSpider-Man\u201d comes on the heels of a long line of superhero movies and what some are calling \u201csuperhero fatigue\u201d for movie audiences, as Margaret Darby pointed out in her review for Deseret News of \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day.\u201d And that fatigue seems to show through in a number of critics\u2019 reviews of the film. <\/p>\n

But Darby wrote that the new movie \u201cgives Marvel a much-needed jolt of energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Brand New Day\u2019 likely won\u2019t be enough to cure superhero burnout, but it is Marvel\u2019s strongest effort in recent years,\u201d Darby wrote, \u201cpreserving the \u2018Spider-Man\u2019 franchise\u2019s solid reputation while pointing the studio in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some critics felt like \u201cBrand New Day\u201d was enough of a departure from the Marvel formula to give it a fresh feel, including Laura Sirikul for Forbes, who wrote the movie is \u201crefreshing and, despite the MCU continuation, feels like something \u2018brand new\u2019 in this superhero world.\u201d<\/p>\n

But others felt that the weight of the Marvel universe bogged the movie down. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis movie feels as if it\u2019s carrying more franchise weight on its shoulders, and that leaves less room for emotional weight,\u201d The New York Times\u2019 Alissa Wilkinson wrote. \u201cIt\u2019s more scattered as a result, and while hardcore M.C.U. fans might be pleased, the rest of us are, demonstrably, getting kind of tired of having to do our homework.\u201d <\/p>\n

Still, many of the reviews were positive, though muted. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf nothing else, \u2018Spider-Man: Brand New Day\u2019 is proof that you can at least try to build a better Marvel movie \u2014 even with its flaws, this one is superior to most,\u201d Stephanie Zacharek wrote for Time magazine.<\/p>\n

And several critics had high praise for Tom Holland\u2019s performance in his fourth outing as the web-slinger \u2014 the Times called it \u201cwinsome and wonderfully kinetic,\u201d and USA Today\u2019s Brian Truitt said it was Holland\u2019s \u201cmost emotionally gripping work ever.\u201d <\/p>\n
