Heard of the saying: Mess around and find out? President Donald Trump is getting a taste of the \u201cfinding out\u201d this week. <\/p>\n

If you\u2019ll remember during the primary election season, there were a handful of incumbent Republicans who Trump personally campaigned to remove from office. He had complaints they weren\u2019t loyal enough or they were blocking his agenda, or he had other candidates he just liked better. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s always a risky move to remove members of your own party, especially when they still have months left in office. Those lawmakers suddenly become free agents \u2014 and they can stall Trump\u2019s agenda. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s exactly what we\u2019re seeing right now in the Senate as Sens. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas hold up Trump\u2019s nominee for attorney general. <\/p>\n

Todd Blanche was set to get a committee vote this week, teeing him for final confirmation in the Senate. <\/p>\n

But Tillis and Cornyn, who are both on the committee and crucial votes for Blanche to advance, had some demands they needed to see fulfilled before they were ready to vote yes.<\/p>\n

Essentially, the pair wanted Blanche to put some promises in writing to modify a recent settlement between Trump and the Department of Justice stemming from the president\u2019s lawsuit against the IRS. <\/p>\n

A quick catch-up: That settlement resulted in the creation of a $1.78 billion anti-weaponization fund, which would allow individuals to be compensated if they feel they have been unfairly targeted by the federal government, as well as an agreement that the president could not be audited by the Internal Revenue Service.<\/p>\n

Republican senators previously revolted over the creation of the anti-weaponization fund, prompting Blanche to deem it essentially dead. But Tillis and Cornyn want that in writing to ensure the fund cannot be revived in the future. <\/p>\n

While the trio were exchanging proposals all week, they have yet to come to an agreement. That resulted in the committee vote on Thursday getting postponed \u2014 and raising questions on whether Blanche can be approved by the full Senate before they leave for August recess. <\/p>\n

Tensions were still running high on Thursday, during the final scheduled votes of the week, making a resolution seem far more unlikely. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes no sense to me,\u201d Tillis told reporters. \u201cThis is not popular. The president\u2019s not winning on this issue. It is killing some of our candidates because they can\u2019t explain it. And now it looks like they weren\u2019t being honest when they said it was inoperative.\u201d<\/p>\n

At one point, Tillis and Cornyn questioned who Blanche was getting advice from. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think if this were just between me and Todd Blanche, we would have worked this out,\u201d Cornyn said. \u201cBut apparently he\u2019s getting some pushback from higher-ups at the White House. I don\u2019t know who, but this doesn\u2019t need to be this hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cornyn told reporters that the White House made a proposal on Wednesday evening followed by a counterproposal by him and Tillis. By Thursday morning, \u201cthat was all off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shortly after that, Trump fired off on social media, railing against the two Republican senators \u2014 and claiming he doesn\u2019t need them to get Blanche as his attorney general at the end of the day. Both incumbents will leave the Senate in January, prompting Trump to threaten holding off his nomination until then. <\/p>\n

\u201cI have no objection to temporarily withdrawing Todd\u2019s name, if they do not do the right thing, and putting him back after Cornyn and Tillis are out of office,\u201d Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. <\/p>\n

In the meantime, Trump said Blanche would remain as acting attorney general. <\/p>\n

Cornyn and Tillis not the only senators with questions<\/h3>\n

As you can imagine, this didn\u2019t go over well with Tillis and Cornyn, who are still refusing to budge on the issue and say the president is getting bad advice. <\/p>\n

\u201cPOTUS is mistaken if he believes concerns about the provisions in his tax lawsuit settlement are limited to me and Senator Tillis,\u201d Cornyn responded in a social media post. <\/p>\n

Cornyn has a point. A handful of other Republicans who are not on the Judiciary Committee have expressed their own concerns with the IRS settlement deal and have not decided if they\u2019d support Blanche\u2019s nomination when it comes before the full Senate. Included in that group: Utah Sen. John Curtis. <\/p>\n

Curtis met with Blanche on Wednesday, and he told me afterward that he is still \u201cnot absolutely there\u201d on his nomination. Not only that, he supports Cornyn\u2019s and Tillis\u2019 efforts. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think what they\u2019re doing is smart,\u201d Curtis said. \u201cI think basically it boils down to: Attorney General Blanche, he says (the fund is) dead. They want absolute confirmation. \u2026 And I think that\u2019s probably a good ask on their part.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump went even further on Friday when he actually defended the anti-weaponization fund in a social media post \u2014 indicating he has been weighing in from the sidelines. <\/p>\n

\u201cI will always feel that these victims of government abuse should be paid back for what they were forced to endure, their lives have been ruined!\u201d he wrote. \u201cMillions of people agree with me, as was proven in my landslide Presidential win, where this was a major subject of debate, and so did John Cornyn, until he lost his Election to an opponent that I Endorsed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Light at the end of the tunnel? After all the tension, Blanche ended up meeting with Cornyn and Tillis later Thursday evening, continuing into Friday according to reports. After talks wrapped, reports indicated there is still the possibility of a deal. <\/p>\n

    Mike Lee has a message for colleagues raging against his recess cancellation bid<\/h3>\n

    If you\u2019ve kept up with my reporting this week, you know there is a big fight right now on whether the Senate should go on its August recess with some legislative priorities still pending. <\/p>\n

    Utah Sen. Mike Lee is leading that charge, demanding the Senate stay in session until senators pass his SAVE America Act. He\u2019s gotten support from more than a dozen other Republicans \u2014 but others want him to cut it out.<\/p>\n

    \u201cHe\u2019s demoralizing our base of voters we\u2019re depending on in 99 days to elect Republicans,\u201d Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said of Lee\u2019s gambit. \u201cWhat possible rationale could there be for that other than self-aggrandizement.\u201d<\/p>\n

    There are some concerns among vulnerable incumbents to get home and campaign during the district work period. After all, the November elections are right around the corner \u2014 and control of the Senate is up for grabs. <\/p>\n

    But Lee doesn\u2019t buy the argument that staying in session puts Republicans in a bad spot for the midterms. <\/p>\n

    \u201cAmericans reward those who truly fight for them,\u201d he told me in a statement. \u201cWhat they will not tolerate are politicians who don\u2019t even try. Instead of attacking champions of the SAVE America Act like President Trump, those concerned about re-election should consider instead applying pressure to their colleagues who are standing in the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Not everyone agrees with that standpoint. This is how one Senate GOP leadership aide put it to me: \u201cThe only way to pass the SAVE America Act is to grow the majority.\u201d<\/p>\n

    At the time I\u2019m writing this, the plan is to still go on recess by the end of next week. But Lee has said he may force a vote on whether to adjourn \u2014 which may or may not be successful, but it will force Republicans to go on the record. <\/p>\n
