Congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the United States held a special discussion on May 31 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of their country\u2019s founding.<\/p>\n

A video and accompanying guide, titled \u201cCelebrating the Founding of the United States and the U.S. Constitution,\u201d invited American Latter-day Saints to give thanks for the freedoms preserved by the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution. The video was shown to all adult members of the church at the beginning of Sunday school classes, after which members were invited to participate in a discussion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a history lesson or a political discussion,\u201d the guide states. \u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity to rejoice in \u2018the Lord our God, who has redeemed us and made us free.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Important fundamentals for all\u2019<\/h3>\n

Sunday\u2019s discussion began with a video featuring President D. Todd Christofferson of the First Presidency and Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Both men practiced law and studied the Constitution before their calling as apostles.<\/p>\n

In the video, the leaders explained that the special discussion was being held in all U.S. congregations of the Church of Jesus Christ in honor of the nation\u2019s semiquincentennial. They focused their message on the underlying principles of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese underlying principles have relevance not only for the United States and its citizens but for the world,\u201d President Christofferson said. <\/p>\n
