Crews were called about 6 p.m. to the fire in the area of 1950 E. Circle of Hope Dr. on the east side of the university.

The “fire is considerable in size,” estimated at more than 50 acres, said Salt Lake City fire spokesman Chad Jepperson.

State and federal firefighters are helping battle the blaze.

No structures are directly threatened, Jepperson said, but the Red Butte structure and canyon are under voluntary evacuations.

Neighborhoods in the area are not threatened, as winds are expected to shift southwest down the mountain, according to firefighters.

Firefighters urged people not to fly drones in the area.

A campus alert went out to students advising them to stay inside as smoke is affecting the east side of campus. U. Health facilities remain operational, the alert said.
