This time, it was Orem High edge Jag Ioane, who took his official visit to BYU a little over a month ago.

Ioane is the sixth player from the Beehive State to commit to the Cougars in this recruiting cycle.

Who is Jag Ioane?

Ioane is a 6-3, 185-pound edge rushing talent who is rated a three-star recruit with an 0.86 composite ranking and is the No. 22 prospect from the state of Utah in 247 Sports’ composite rankings. 247 composite also has him as the No. 103 edge rusher on a national level.

Ioane helped Orem wins its first state title since 2020 last season, when the Tigers beat Springville 42-7 in the 5A state championship game.

He ended his junior year with 30 tackles and six sacks, as well as a defensive touchdown. In Orem’s 5A semifinal win over West, Ioane had six tackles and a sack to help the Tigers advance to the championship game.

BYU beat out several other prominent schools for Ioane’s commitment. This summer, he also took official visits to Michigan, Washington, Utah and Boise State, as well as an official visit to BYU mid-June.

Ioane, who projects as a hybrid edge/linebacker at the college level, told On3’s Greg Biggins why he chose BYU over his other finalists that included two Big Ten schools, rival Utah and Group of 6 darling Boise State.

“The biggest reasons I chose BYU is the player development, the coaching staff and the vision they have for me to ultimately make it to the next level,” Ioane told Biggins. “The coaching staff at BYU showed me time and time again how they will utilize me and develop me into the player I want to become.

“My family gave me their input as well but left it up to me completely. I’ve been to BYU a ton over the last year and really like the direction the program is going in and I’m really excited to be a part of what they’re building right now.”

How does Jag Ioane fit into BYU’s 2027 recruiting class?

It’s been a strong recruiting cycle for BYU on the defensive front, and Ioane adds another key piece to that puzzle.

The highest-rated recruit in BYU’s 2027 class, four-star Uhila Wolfgramm of Maple Mountain High, is also an edge rusher. The Cougars also have commits from several other defensive linemen, including Jeremiah Williams of California, and Granger High’s Moa Havili.
