Defensively, he tallied seven tackles for the Chargers and leads the team with 69 total tackles through eight games this season.
He also tacked on a rushing TD in the victory over Cedar valley.
“Tate is an emotional leader, mentor and great example both on and off the field for our football team,” said Corner Canyon coach Casey Sutera.
Patterson was voted a second-team all-stater a year ago as a junior, and he’s built on that success with a strong senior season.
Volleyball
Jerzi Johnson, Panguitch (Jr.)
In a big weekend for Panguitch volleyball, junior middle blocker Jerzi Johnson came up clutch throughout, leading the Bobcats to four wins at the 1A/2A clash at the Sevier Valley Center.
Her steady play led Panguitch to wins over Rowland Hall, Tintic, Tabiona and Altamont.
“Jerzi is such a key player for our team because she is always so willing to stay after practice to work on skills, whether that is skills for herself or skills with other students. She is always willing to help out the other girls if they have questions or if I ask her to help,” said Panguitch coach Lexi Griffin.
So far this season, Johnson leads the team with 114 kills and a .389 hitting percentage.

Girls Soccer
Sarah Penrod, Springville (Sr.)
With a 4-1 record in its past five games, Springville is trending in the right direction as the season comes to a close this week. A big part of that success has been senior midfield Sarah Penrod.
In last week’s critical overtime victory over Timpview that buoyed the team’s playoff prospects, Penrod notched a goal in regulation and delivered the assist in overtime as the Red Devils evened their recorded at 8-8 on the season.
“Sarah scored and assisted in the overtime victory versus Timpview and has been a significant part of our late-season turnaround. She’s also been one of our most versatile players, contributing as a forward, outside midfielder and defensive midfielder,” said Springville coach Todd Hollingshead.
On the season, Penrod has tallied two goals and two assists for Springville.

Micah Hooper, Viewmont (Jr)
Micah Hooper turned in a dominant performance at the Region 6 cross country championships at Sugarhouse Park last week.
The junior darted through the 5K course, posting a time of 15:02.5 and finishing over 37 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher from Brighton.
“Micah is disciplined his daily habits, consistent in his work, and fierce on the race course. It’s an awesome example for our team. Excited for the remainder of the season,” said Viewmont coach Trent Hooper.
Earlier this season, Hooper also recorded runner-up finishes at the Freber Classic and the Valhalla Invitational.
He finished in the top 20 at last year’s 5A state meet and will be in the hunt for a top-10 finish a year later.

The senior won the Region 4 championship meet last week, posting a time of 18:52.7 to finish 13 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher.
“Gloria has been consistent in her training and gained the confidence to push herself in workouts and races,” said Taylorsville coach Teren Jameson.
Booth will now turn her attention to the 5A divisional meet and the state meet. A year ago at the state meet, she placed inside the top 50, a finish she will be looking to improve upon later this month.
Girls Tennis
Eleanor Phyfe, Rowland Hall (Fr.)
Eleanor Phyfe made a huge impact for Rowland Hall in her first year playing high school tennis.
The freshman competed at No. 2 singles this year, finishing the regular season with a 12-2 record and then marching to the 3A state title last week at Liberty Park.
Overall for the season, she posted a 40-2 record, losing just four total sets.
“Eleanor was a tremendous addition to our team this season as her maturity and work ethic helped the team achieve the success it had. Eleanor’s single final on Saturday was the overall clinching match before any other position had finished. She was on the verge of a heat stroke as the rallies were going 30-40 shots. She endured and won in straight sets,” said Rowland Hall coach Rich Francey.
Boys Golf
Perry Shaffer, Skyline (So.)
A late surge in region 6 this fall helped Skyline sophomore Perry Shaffer earn Region 6 medalist honors.
He won two of the past three region tournaments, including the final region match at the Ridge Golf Course last week as he shot a 66. He finished region play with a 69.3-stroke average.
“Perry is a talented and hard-working young man who can do anything with a golf club in his hand. Perry has a very calm demeanor and doesn’t seem to be bothered by important situations; he stays calm and doesn’t let adversity get to him. Perry had a great year in a very good region. Very proud of him,” said Skyline coach Kenny James.
Shaffer helped Skyline win the 5A state title as a freshman a year ago, and he’ll take on an even larger role at next week’s state tournament as the Eagles look to repeat.
Baseball
Gradee Montague, Piute (So.)
Piute sophomore Gradee Montague came up clutch last week, helping Piute to a resounding 19-4 win over Draper APA in the first round of the 1A state tournament.
Montague went 2 for 2 with two walks and two RBIs to spearhead the win for the No. 6 seed T-Birds over No. 11 seed Draper APA.
For the season, he’s batting .383 with 23 RBI, 30 runs and 10 stolen bases. He’s also made contributions on the mound.
“Gradee has stepped up and is willing to pitch whenever called on and is always eager to get better at the game,” said Piute coach Mike Gaylor.
Piute now advances to the second round of the state tournament and will face No. 3 seed Wayne.
