SALT LAKE CITY – Kamryn Newman has been labeled one of Utah’s top girls high school tennis players since she became a student at Bingham, but she hasn’t felt like she had much to show for it, and the possibility of earning an individual state title seemed to become less likely two years ago when she was diagnosed with diabetes.

That all changed Saturday, however, as Newman blasted through the 6A state tennis tournament at Liberty Park. The junior was finally able to celebrate — and be the center of attention in her team’s post-tourney photo session.

Newman earned the No. 1 singles title and helped the Miners put some pressure on the usual Utah County favorites, though Lone Peak took advantage of its talent in singles play by posting 53 points, followed by Skyridge (46), Bingham (42), Corner Canyon (27) and American Fork (21).

Lone Peak coach Roger Baumgartner was especially proud of his team, which also won the team title in 2025 but lost five of its seven starters to graduation.

“This was a weird year,” Baumgartner said. “We knew coming in that winning back-to-back (titles) was going to be a huge challenge. In region, we play each other three, four or five times and we push each other to be really good.”

Newman pushed the Knights a little harder. She came in as the top seed and handled her competition, even defeating Corner Canyon’s Evelyn Marsh, who edged her last year, in the semifinals.

Newman then prevented Lone Peak from sweeping the singles action with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ava Jensen.

“This didn’t seem possible a couple of years ago,” said Newman, who learned of her diagnosis two years ago just before state but willed herself to recover quickly enough to take second place.

She also reached the finals last year but each time fell to a Skyridge opponent.

“I trusted my shot more (this year),” she said. “At first, I really felt the anxiety and nerves but got some momentum and really felt the energy with all of the people cheering for me.”

Lone Peak’s Halle Kitchen earned the No. 2 singles individual title and Lily Goodwin earned straight-set wins throughout the tourney at No. 3 singles.

The team of Madison Yeates and Evalyn Roberts gave Bingham some more points in No. 1 doubles, defeating Kiri Sperry and Molly Jarvie of Skyridge in Liberty Park’s bubble when a late-afternoon thunderstorm moved the action indoors.

Anabelle Rowley and Chloe Barker of Skyridge finished the tourney by rallying past Lone Peak’s Meheek Sameer and Brinley Santiago 6-7, 6-2, 6-3, which allowed the Falcons to move past Bingham and finish in second place.
