The school is now authorized to recruit an inaugural class of students and launch an MD program beginning in July 2027.
The announcement comes after the school received preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
The school’s dean, Mark Ott, learned of the accreditation by email, he said.
“We will welcome applications from students in the next couple of weeks,” Ott said. “We need to wait for some (national) systems to be updated.”
He told the Deseret News the first class will consist of 60 students. The size will grow in the future when BYU receives full accreditation, a process that generally takes four years.
Prospective students can visit medicine.byu.edu, where they can learn about the requirements.
